Description (provided by Consulting Tools):
“Facet5 is a 'Big 5' factor personality model, which allows managers to understand how people differ in their behaviour, motivation, attitudes and aspirations.
Cost: There is no fee for setup (this is included in accreditation cost) and no licence fee. Reports cost £75.
Do you have to be qualified to interpret the questionnaires:
Yes, interpreters have to be accredited. This is a 2-day course that costs £595 per person. The accreditation cost includes all materials and personally branded account setup.
Candidate Experience (“guinea pig” candidate was Jaime):
The instructions were very clear and easy to follow and in total from logging in to completing it took a total of about 15 minutes. I had to answer a range of questions that were sometimes quite difficult in terms of choosing general answers and I found myself very often muttering ‘it depends on the situation or who I am dealing with in what context’. So in terms of relevance at face value it didn’t come across as particularly strong when completing the questionnaire.
As regards the feedback report, I was pleasantly surprised. Although I found some of the individual scales a bit misleading and slightly off kilter in terms of where I was placed, the information was well thought through and surprisingly accurate given the short time it took. The summaries towards the end were also surprisingly accurate - such as their review on leadership – how to develop people, what to watch for and how to motivate them.
We should point out that Jaime was sent the report by email and not given a full feedback session which would have an impact on his understanding of the report.
Overview of Feedback Report: The report produced was 17 pages long. As soon as I viewed the report I could see why training may be required. In fact when I was sent the report it was suggested that someone accredited in Facet5 talked me through it. The report looks at a few questionnaire statistics to start with – looking for potential patterns that may show a lack of accuracy due to candidate input issues. The profile looks at five main scales (will, energy, affection, control and emotionality). For each of these scales there are sub categories (for example within “will” there are determination, confrontation and independence.). There is a score given for each of these and a narrative explaining what a high or low score may suggest. An overall statement is made for each scale, eg for energy “your style is very positive and involved, good at handling lots of things at once….”
The report then goes on to classify the candidate as belonging to a particular “Facet Family”. There are 17 Facet Families. There is a narrative to describe what being this type of person means; looking at what sort of leader they are, what they are motivated by, the contribution they make to a team and how they need/like to be managed.
The report also looks at competencies around leadership, communication, planning and organisation, etc. Finally it goes on to look at work preferences stating what sort of the role the candidate may be most suited to and what elements are needed to motivate the particular individual
Summary
It was interesting to see the combination of a scale based and type based personality profile. The narrative for the scales was fairly basic – but could be interpreted by a trained user. The facet family is a useful tool for those more used to classifying candidates. I thought this was a very thorough report, covering a lot of detail. In fact my only concern is that I feel the more questions asked of the candidate the more likely the report is to be highly validated – and this report only takes 15 minutes to complete – which in psychometric terms is fairly quick.
