Article One: Psychometric Product Review: The Profile Report on Individual Style & Motivation (PRISM)

Company Name: DSA Business Psychology
Product Name: The Profile Report on Individual Style & Motivation
Website Address: http://www.pario.info

Description (provided by DSA): PRISM assesses work behaviour, motivation and role effectiveness. Results are transferred to a profile sheet prior to feedback. A Role Profiling workbook is also available.

Cost: £495 for PC system set-up (includes 10 reports with a value of £360) Online full reports cost £36 each (reports for the shorter version of the questionnaire - PRISM Workplace - cost £27). Role Profiling Workbook - cost £45. There is also a competency-focused development workbook (cost £60).

Do you have to be qualified to interpret the questionnaires: PRISM can be supplied directly to people with intermediate / full BPS “Level B” accreditation, but training is recommended. A two-day training course is the standard introduction to PRISM and includes coverage of role profiling and performance management issues.

Candidate Experience (guinea pig candidate was Linsey): It took about 15 minutes to complete this questionnaire. The questions were in the format of statements and I had to choose one or other of the statements depending on which statement I thought was most true to me. The instructions were very clear and they indicated how long it might take me. It also told me not to leave my PC during the test.

I found this test to be relatively easy. I did find that sometimes both statements were true or that they didn't apply. I therefore put the most relevant answer. The test did take less time than they said which was good.

After giving my name in the heading of the report the entire first section didn't mention my name once – making me feel detached from it – it could be related to anyone. However, the layout of the motivation and work style sections was a much nicer way of feeding back the information. Looking at the tables/ graphs presented in the results I felt that some of the points were a little low compared to where I would see myself. For example the “Prism Scales” gave me a rating of 4 relating for outgoing- confident. I would rate myself higher on this point. I also felt some of the other additional scales were too low in terms of drive and enthusiasm. However, as an untrained reader of the report there could be an explanation I am unaware of.

I felt that the questionnaire did come to the right conclusions in the way that I like to work in a team. Overall I think that the questionnaire could have been a bit more comprehensive to get a more accurate answer.

Overview of Feedback Report: I received two feedback reports. The full report was 7 pages of narrative and the summary report was 5 pages (a combination of graphs and bullet points). In the full report, part one highlights “key aspects of behaviour” showing behavioural elements which may impact upon the candidate’s style or preference of working. The report then goes on to look at three broad headings; “approach to problems”, “approach to people” and “approach to tasks”. The interpretation in these sections makes specific reference to each of the 24 scales appearing on the profile. Unlike with many systems, within the report the profile chart is unfortunately not shown. Part three of the report summarises key issues influencing the candidate’s motivation and work-style. The summary report contains similar information to the full report but in a bullet point format followed by profile charts covering topics such as “personal interaction”, “decision making” and “influence and persuasion”.

Summary
I thought the Prism reports gave a good combination of narrative and profile charts. The key aspects of behaviour section was a really useful tool for giving an overview of a candidate. The areas the report covers would probably make the report useful for most levels of recruitment and the addition of the profile charts would allow an experienced user to extract further information relating to a candidates potential suitability for a role. At £36 per candidate this would be a useful psychometric tool for most recruitment situations.

Article Two: Life as an Australian Recruiter by Jason Addicott

A large part of the recruitment community in Australia is from the UK. Why is this so?
Well, you can’t knock the lifestyle It is true that we all on occasion will work 10 + hour days, but in my London based recruitment role this also meant a fight either end of the day to get there and back. To be able to take in a swim, surf, sunbathe, or run either end of your working day is a big attraction and, I believe, is conducive to a good work/life balance. The standard of living is excellent, it is easy to afford rental accommodation with views, pools, gyms and spa’s. Heating bills and council tax bills are things of the past. The major cities are very multicultural, facilitating high quality affordable eating out. Successful recruiters have plenty to spend their money on. Sydney and Melbourne are sophisticated metropolis’ boasting bars, clubs and great shopping. It is possible to take in skiing, snow boarding, rainforest trekking and sunbathing all at the same time of year.

Why do we stay?
There are no huge cultural differences (although IT recruiters in the networking space will have to get out of the habit of saying ‘routers’ at it means something very different in Australia!!) and assimilation is easy. It is very common for fresh off the boat UK trained recruiters to do very well in a short period of time. The lifestyle and culture means that some, not all, but some Australians, are less interested in sitting in an office for 8-10 hours a day and more interested in taking advantage of their beautiful county and climate, an understandable philosophy. Those of us used to the demands of recruitment in the UK take it in our stride. The recruitment market is less populated than some of the major locations in the UK and business is good.

The Aussies are a very sporting nation, by all definitions of the word. I found them incredibly gracious towards the English post rugby world cup and the current ashes test is proving very enjoyable.

In business terms it means you are given a ‘fair go’. An Australian term where opportunities are available to those who ask for it. There is very little business snobbery and ‘if you’re good enough, you're old enough’ is common thinking. Our business has grown very quickly partly due to open minded, welcoming clients. One candidate commented that my accent makes me sound distinguished, professional and someone to do business with. I have a South Wales accent and it’s never been described like that in the UK!!

A degree and 1 + years recruitment experience, or no degree and 4 years experience and a formal job offer will qualify you for a 4 year working visa. Good advice would be to have some time exploring Australia before starting work, as whilst the lifestyle is great, we aren’t on holiday all the time!
