Article One: Training Course Review – “Headhunting” from Lander Associates by Jo Kavanagh

A warm sunny morning in central London was a good start for my training course in Headhunting organised by Lander Associates. I had been looking forward to the course for some weeks now, feeling that I desperately needed some new ideas, general motivation and re-focusing. I felt even more motivated about the course after an initial chat with Alan Clarke, my course trainer, the week before attending to discuss objectives and aims for the day.

The venue was on the Strand, accessible via Leicester Square tube, the environment excellent with plenty of fresh fruit, coffee and juice on arrival.

The day began with an initial discussion about headhunting and the benefits to all. The group gelled well, especially aided by the fact that we were all from different companies. The course had 10 delegates which was perfect for the timing of the day and working in different groups.

Each delegate was asked at the start for 2 objectives for the day’s training, the topics covered dealt with everyone’s personal objectives and were straight forward, logical and structured. Areas covered included identifying sources of candidates, name gathering techniques and techniques to bypass the dreaded ‘gatekeeper’. There then followed a discussion about factors motivating people to move. Each of the areas covered used a different learning technique with one on one discussion, group discussion and solo work. The group work was especially useful as lots of different working methods were discussed.

At lunchtime (where we were again well looked after - the venue even has its own chef!) there was a valuable opportunity to talk to each other more generally and catch up on missed calls from candidates and clients.

The afternoon centred around contacting the candidate, from the initial pitch and selling the opportunity to handling responses and profiling candidates. The afternoon finished with training on handling offers and combating the all too familiar counter offers and deal breakers. Before the training course finished the objectives each of us had set were re-visited and Alan ensured each of us felt our aims had been achieved.

Alan provided information in a way that can be directly applied to my everyday work and I will be implementing his advice. His delivery style was informative and friendly and his knowledge of recruitment and the issues that consultants face was very detailed. He is very enthusiastic about his subject and gave a genuine offer of advice and support in the future if we struggled with anything covered. Every delegate was given a workbook to take away at the end of the day which I am sure will be useful for the future when I need to put myself back on track.

I thought that the course was very effective and informative and achieved its aims. It is suitable for seasoned recruiters as well as those in resourcer or consultant roles. For more experienced recruiters the course would be an excellent method of motivating and refocusing individuals whilst offering advice that is practical and applicable. For those new to headhunting the course would leave you brimming with useful ideas and tools and feeling very motivated.

On the train journey home I felt energised and well equipped to put Alan’s words into action the following morning ……in fact the very next day I tried some new techniques with very positive results!!

Article Two: A Buyer’s Market: how to maximise your firm’s appeal to candidates by Prism Recruitment

The market is now firmly candidate constrained and quality individuals with high demand skillsets are increasingly likely to be in receipt of several job offers.

With this background it is more important than ever that employers review all aspects of their recruitment strategy to ensure that they have every opportunity to impress prospective hires.

This is a huge topic, which can be broken down into several key areas:

1. Take an honest look at your firm, identify your key USPs for candidates and work to “accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative”. Consistently the three most important attractors are quality of work and clients, career progression and salary. Make sure that all your staff and candidates’ collateral (job specifications, information pack, website etc) are “on message”.

2. First impressions count: put yourself in the place of a candidate and look critically at all the points where a candidate first comes into contact with your firm. This will include website, job description, other candidate briefing information (if any!), agencies, interviewers.

3. Recruitment process: should be effective, efficient, fast, professional and friendly. Very, very few firms get it right, yet here is a real opportunity for “Cinderellas” to impress and have real competitive edge. More potential matches fall apart because of problems or delays in the process than any other reason.

4. Making the offer: another critical stage that is rarely handled well, even though the basics are surprisingly obvious. Make sure you know everything about their current package and have specifically discussed their requirements and understand the reasons for them. Make them feel wanted. Try and offer them just a bit more than they were expecting. Keep in touch with them. Get the offer out quickly. Follow it up with a friendly ‘phone call. If you can’t offer them quite what they want can you be creative: a sign on bonus, an early salary review, a bonus guarantee, enhanced benefits or a home base?

Prism has considerable experience of a very broad cross section of employers and see both best practice and understand problem areas. If you would like to discuss how Prism can help you attract premium candidates please contact Chris Sale, Director at csale@prismrecruitment.com
