My Favourites

http://www.newsnow.co.uk - Real-time information on what’s happening within business….my personal favourite is the UK IT section which provides a good insight to what’s happening with clients and the competition

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk - I always use this site before booking any hotel as it gives unbiased travel reviews about hotels, attractions and restaurants around the world. It’s helped me find some great places to stay for both business and pleasure

http://www.moneysupermarket.com - This site has saved me hundreds of pounds on car and home insurance…….saves all the hassle of contacting different insurance companies. www.confused.com is similar but in my experience wasn’t as competitive

Article One: The Art of Headhunting Course Review by Paul McCarthy

With many training courses under my belt over quite a number of years, I’m always looking at the fine details of anything I choose to attend. Small things can make a big difference to the learning process. So what was I expecting from a Headhunting course and what kind of experience did I have?

Two weeks before the course, I very efficiently received my reminder notification from Dee Parker with Delegate Confirmation and Travel and accommodation documents attached. This included a link to a pre-course questionnaire at the www.therecruitmentacademy.com website (an overview of the course content is on the site too).

These details of course mentioned the location on King William Street, London and other essentials, which were completely as described: “The Regus Centre houses bright, modern training suites and is air-conditioned with PC’s available for internet access and also lounge areas for relaxing in. Of course being in central London, a cash-point, chemist and numerous pubs, restaurants and shops are located close by should you need them.”

A two course buffet lunch was provided. Along with the usual coffee’s and tea’s juices and water.

So first impressions were of a professional, and well run seminar. On arriving in the training room I was welcomed by Roy and invited to find a place to sit. I’m no spring Chicken so I was immediately struck by the relative youth of the delegates (initially three male and seven female) and to begin with, felt a little out of place. Roy quickly dispelled this with his friendly approach and high levels of energy helped along by little colourful stress reliever toys on each desk. Roy quickly mentioned that he was not a traditional trainer but that he was passionate about Recruiting and wanted to share his almost twenty years of experience in the industry, with us.

The formal core structure of the seminar was assisted by a workbook with eleven or twelve main parts, but this was aided by a number of other items including a display screen, the very entertaining presence of Roy and the background and personalities of the delegates themselves. At one point I noticed that the screen was displaying a picture of a headless guy selecting heads off a shelf, but it took me a while to notice this as I was so engaged in Roy’s presentation and performance. And this mostly sums up the experience as completely engaging. No yawning or dreaming at this particular event, there was so much to learn and it was presented in a fun and fruitful way, calculated to stimulate more of your senses then the normal passive learning experience.

It was notable that Roy had worked previously, or was working currently, with some of the delegates and had professional relationships with some of their organisations and at the end of the day long course he left the offer to all of being able to e-mail him for advise on the strategies and techniques covered. The delegates themselves were an interesting group of individuals from retained search researchers, to very experienced individuals with up to twenty years in the business and also one young professional who had not yet started with her new company but had invested her own time in order to be prepared. This kind of focus and dedication was quite the norm for these individuals and certainly added to the very positive experience.

There is indeed much in the way of common sense and the use of one’s own personal qualities and abilities involved in the headhunting process, but with the excellent background and experience of Roy Ripper transmitted in that deft, well thought out and professional style this seminar is definitely worthwhile. It’s a very competitive recruitment marketplace today and the tools and techniques offered by the Recruitment Academy are certainly an advantage.

Article Two: Job Board Review: Recruitment Careers by Russell Murch

This month sees me talking with John Bult of Recruitment Careers (www.recruitmentcareers.co.uk)

Q: What was the inspiration behind the site?

There is a pattern here. Originally we were managers within the pharmaceutical industry and received poor service from recruitment companies. We decided to set up an agency ourselves in pharmaceuticals.

After 4 years we became frustrated with the performance of jobs boards and felt there were some common flaws in all jobs boards, so we decided to set up our own in pharmaceuticals. It was so successful after 4 months we decided to build a portfolio; we launched recruitmentcareers.co.uk based upon the same principles, and now have up to 20 sectors in our sites.

Q: What identifies recruitmentcareers from other job sites?

I wouldn't want to give all our secrets away :but one key thing is that the site prevents agencies from 'drowning' the site with vacancies, (ie many duplicates placed to scoop larger shares of traffic). Many jobs boards allow an unlimited vacancy option which can cause a string of problems and results in sites carrying many thousands of jobs, one advert posted then becomes a drop in the ocean. Our site is structured such that each job is a genuine stand alone job, and the total numbers on the site will be hundreds not thousands giving individual adverts a much better chance of impact.

Q: The site was launching in Jan 06, how much of a success has it been to date?

Very successful. The amount of traffic and numbers of applicants continues to rise, and due to the way it's marketed, it's highly targeted traffic rather than raw numbers. We are signing new clients consistently and those who have signed up continue to report good results in terms of placements made.

Q: Are there any geographic/sector boundaries?

At present, the site is focused within the UK although there's no reason we couldn't take it abroad in time.

Q: What do you feel could be added to the site to make it even better?

Nothing really, we've tried to keep it simple for both clients and candidates...so far seems so good We keep talking to the users of the site. Ultimately if the customers give us some ideas to improve it we're all ears!

RM summary:

My first impressions of this job site were that it had an excessive use of rounded corners and green with some of the surrounding boxes putting it off balance and making it a little difficult to know where to look first.

The use of the Google ads on the base of the home page is a little off putting for me as it has pangs of somebody attempting an Search Engine Optimisation campaign without too much thought being put in.

Anyhow those were my first impressions, once I began to look at the site from a candidates angle, all that was put to one side as I quickly realised there was good deal of effort put into making this a job site that is focused on job seekers and giving them as much detail and advice as is possible. I particularly like the job application where it is possible to contact the employer directly without having to go through a covert operation to apply.

I like the directory and links section, which is very informative and focused for the main part.

From a recruiter prospective, it is great to be able to see the advertising costs before signing up with the auto keyword submission for finding candidates matching your chosen criteria.

Overall I would say the site has good focus on its intended audience with some great functionality for recruiters and candidates.
