One: Job Board Review: tcetoday by NES International
URL: www.tcetoday.com
Description
The Chemical Engineer (TCE) magazine online: source of news and jobs for the process industries.
Appearance
Latest news is displayed in the centre of the homepage, giving it prominence over all other contents. The design of the homepage is simple and striking, with a sophisticated colour scheme and limited but effective use of
images.
Navigation
The navigation options are clearly displayed and instantly tell site visitors where they can access the information they need. Appearing on both sides of the homepage, the left shows options such as jobs, message board and contacts and the right shows options that relate more specifically to the TCE such as awards, salary survey and subscription options.
The job search function is not the primary function of this web site, so can get lost amongst the navigation - but this is balanced by there being a good deal of industry information. The login options could also be potentially lost within the header images, so in terms of accessibility greater visibility could help.
Contents
The job search facility on this site provides details of all jobs that have been advertised in the TCE and has options to either browse all current vacancies, or to specify criteria such as job title, sector, location, contract type and company. Selecting any of these criteria is highly effective in narrowing down search results.
Members of the IchemE (the Institution of Chemical Engineers) and subscribers to the TCE have login details to access further information within the site, including previous articles published online, back copies of the TCE and exclusive access to jobs that are yet to be advertised in the publication.
The message board facility enables chemical engineers to discuss and debate topics of importance, with clear headings and sub-headings such as health and safety, education and employment and career advice to categorize conversations. This is an excellent networking opportunity for those who contribute.
Links to IChemE websites give access to an even wider source of information relating to the process industry, including the Institution’s main website and their whynotchemeng campaign site. The salary survey is perhaps one of the weakest features of the site, as it is from 2004 - so is rather dated - and also requires payment Other sites or companies release their salary surveys free of charge.
Conclusion
This website is successful in providing news and jobs to the process industry. Navigation around the site is straight forward, meaning that users are more likely to return after their first visit. The information within the news provided and in the job specifications that accompany each vacancy is clear and concise.
While the site does offer some good resources, it is poorly promoted when compared to other specialist recruitment web sites.

Two: How to Keep the Holiday Feeling Alive by Helen Miller
How do you feel about September? Are you looking forward to the beautiful colours of autumn and the cosy winter nights in? Or perhaps you wonder why you feel so healthy and relaxed on holiday and so hassled and lethargic at home? If your two weeks in the sun are you favourite two weeks of the year perhaps you could learn how to bring that holiday feeling home?
Why do you feel fabulous on holiday? Think about what you do on holiday. You probably ate freshly prepared food. You may have taken your time to eat and drink your fill. You probably took lots of gentle exercise outside. Time had less meaning as you could get up, eat, and sleep, when you wanted to. You spent time with people you love. It sounds a world away – so how can you make your normal life feel more like this?
Life on holiday is simpler, with less crammed in. It isn’t structured and is full of simple pleasures. The key to making your normal life more like a holiday is to bring some simple pleasures back home.
Getting a good night’s sleep is a simple pleasure that helps us feel so much better. We sleep easier when we allow a few minutes to relax before bed. As you lie in bed remind yourself of any little successes of the day as you drop off. If you find sleep elusive, a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow, or reading a chapter of a book can help you relax.
Many people find their surroundings affect how well they sleep. We sleep well in a cool dark room, so simple steps like turning your radiator down or choosing heavy curtains that block the light out can make a difference. If your pillow or mattress is uncomfortable, then try turning or replacing them. Make your bedroom a haven of tranquillity by removing clutter and anything with an annoying standby light.
We know that sleeping well helps us cope with whatever life throws at us. Well, the same is true of eating well. Our lives are busy but many of us do have time to cook one fresh meal each day. Grilled meats and fish, steamed vegetables, salads, or fresh crusty bread really is quick to prepare and eat. If you have a fridge at work then any leftovers can make a good packed lunch. If this takes too much time then try fresh fruit, seeds or nuts, as a snack, and leave the cooking for the weekend. Eating well helps us feel energetic and helps us fight off minor coughs and colds.
Most of us do not look once at a computer when we take a holiday. Computer screens are hard work for our eyes and mean we sit in the same position for a long time. Naturally we’d focus our eyes on objects much further away than our screen. Find a reason; it could be a comfort break, a drink, a meeting, etc. to walk away from your screen for a couple of minutes each hour. Allow you eyes to refocus on objects further away, have a good stretch, and take a couple of deep breaths to clear out any stale air. After all, you don’t get headaches from eye strain on holiday!
Whatever your job entails, if you feel healthy and alive on holiday, then take action to keep that feeling going.
