One: Change your state, change your result! By Gaynor Lowndes
Have you ever witnessed the same event as someone else and both had completely different recollections of it? How is it possible that you could both be in the same place at the same time and yet have very different experiences? The behaviour we exhibit is a result of the emotional state that we are in. Our emotional states or moods affect everything we do, every thought, every action and every reaction.
We are constantly moving in and out of various emotional states throughout the day – just like breathing, most of the time we are unaware of a change in our state. All human behaviour is a result of an emotional state. Anything fabulous that you have experienced is a result of your emotional state in the same way that being angry or sad is. Many would argue that your mood is a reaction to an external stimulus such as an event that occurs that you have no
control over. However, it has been proven that we as humans can choose our emotional state
and therefore change our reaction and behaviour to any situation that occurs. This means that we can control how we feel and therefore what we do in any given situation.
Changing our emotional state
Anchoring
Anthony Robbins is a leading motivational speaker and coach. Some of you may have attended his seminars where participants walk over hot coals without burning their feet. He does this by “anchoring ” the emotional states of the participants. Basically you create an anchor and then utilise it whenever you need to change our emotional state.
The best way to give anchoring a try is to close your eyes and picture a time you have felt like a million dollars, either professionally or personally. Really “feel” the associated feelings. Once you are in the state, click your fingers. Do it again and again until you have created a habit (normally over a number of days). For the rest of your life, every time you click your fingers, you will instantly feel like a million dollars. Essentially you are creating an association between confidence and physical gestures. Successful people use anchoring as a tool to
change their emotional tastes.
subconscious re-programming
Paul McKenna is a very successful hypnotist, counsellor and motivational speaker. You may recall his TV program where he successfully hypnotised people with phobias and issues that not even psychologists were able to solve. Paul advocates both conscious (thinking) and subconscious (knowing) in order to make permanent changes to your emotional state. His book “Change your life in 7 Days ” is an ideal tool to assist.
Creative visualisation
The concept of visualisation can be a bit “out there” for some people. If you are very right brain like me, visualisation won’t come easily. Persevere as this technique has changed my life. Before I did major pitches, I always visualised the outcome in my mind over a number of days beforehand. I believe as a direct result of this technique I was able to close more deals than any of my colleagues or competitors. If you want to be the best recruiter in your space, then visualise how you will look, what you will say and what you will have when you are the best recruiter in your space. Hold the vision and return to it at the end of each day. Stephen Covey in his highly acclaimed book “The Seven Habits of Highly
Effective People ” says begin with the end in mind. All things are created twice, first in the mind and then in reality. Indeed I have used creative visualisations to manifest many things
in my life. Give this technique a try because I can guarantee you that t will change your life.
Developing emotional intelligence
Another philosophy, useful for changing your mood is understanding the concept of emotional intelligence. Daniel Goleman developed the principles of emotional intelligence, believing that IQ and other behavioural tests were an inaccurate predictor of how well a person would perform “on the job”. Goleman has spent many years developing his ideas, gaining his doctorate in psychology from Harvard University.
Why do people behave in different ways when faced with the same situation? Goleman believes that it is because of the individual level of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence can be defined using ARROW:
a wareness – Being aware of how your personality impacts others
r estraint – Identifying negative emotions that can cause damage
r esilience – Developing an optimistic, persistent nature
o thers (empathy) – Developing an emotional radar
w orking with others (rapport) – Communication, active listening
By mastering the concepts of emotional intelligence, we can improve our lives and become more successful in our working environments. Emotions are habits, and like any habit, out of control emotions can undermine our best efforts. However, by unlearning some emotions
and developing others, we can have control over our lives. Settle on the kind of emotional force you want to be – how do you want others to feel around you?
The principles of emotional intelligence focus on you as an individual regardless of your circumstances, past or present. By mastering the principles of Awareness; Restraint; Resilience; Others (empathy) and Working with others (rapport) you will also master the dynamics of human interaction – that can only spell success for you and all those who come into contact with you, both personally and professionally.
Learning how to change your emotional state means that you have complete control of your feelings – that’s good for you and for those around you.

Two: Recruitment Store’s Proactive Candidate Generation Course review by David Learner
Fish where the fish are. It’s great advice. So where are you going to find those candidates: the ones who are out there on the job market and who’ve taken the first step by making their CVs available on one of countless online job boards?
Look around you. How many of you are there at this fishing lake? How many other recruiters have got in to the office early enough to hook that candidate with offers of exclusive representation and untold numbers of juicy employment opportunities?
Jonathan Jenkins, trainer at Recruitment Store’s Proactive Candidate Generation course, suggests an alternative: fish where the fish aren’t.
So where’s that? Along with a range of recruitment professionals from fields as diverse as finance, IT and science I turned up at Recruitment Store’s Brighton headquarters for a day of hints, tips and secrets from a pair of experts who knew.
Jonathan’s the ex-actor. You can tell; he commands his audience easily, effectively and with great panache. If he shares something with you he leaves the impression that you’re the first person he’s told and that the information’s been newly minted for your benefit alone. If we remember it then that’s why: he makes every syllable count and every thought fresh, inventive and original, even if it’s something that our recruiters’ common sense should have realised a long time ago.
Where we’ve come to fish is in that pool of candidates who haven’t made themselves available on the open market: they’re in the market, they’re just not on the market. They’re perfectly content where they are. They haven’t received that one phone call which will change their lives forever.
And that’s the phone call from you.
The day starts with a simple question: why be proactive? The answers are equally simple: the current skills drain out of the UK means that those quality candidates left are in demand. They’re aware that their expertise is highly sought after and that rich opportunities abound elsewhere for them in the market place. Or are they? Who called them to tell them that? Did you?
Moving on to the differences between executive searching versus contingency headhunting we’re heading into the nitty-gritty of the morning, establishing that many of the skills used by the head hunter are just as available, just as useful, just as heat-seeking as those used by the contingency recruiter. We’re getting close, upfront and personal. We need to recall whether we used deodorant this morning.
Sefton takes over; he leads us through how to use the internet to name gather. Sefton Owens, Recruitment Store director and the day’s second subtle communicator likes kebabs, particularly a mixture of doner and shish with plenty of chilli sauce. We discover that by
researching the internet. At face value, it’s not the sort of information you can slip into a conversation with
Sefton.
“Hi Sefton, my name’s David. We haven’t met but I’ve got a great job opportunity for you. I hear you like kebabs.”
No. No subtlety there then, but I bet if you remember anything at all about this article you’ll remember that Sefton Owens likes kebabs. That’s what this part of the morning does: it offers fingerposts through the High Street of a million shops, currently known as the internet, that enable us to find vital information to give our pitch the edge. Sefton shows us the benefits of name gathering, where the information can be found and how that data can provide the warmest of introductions to someone we don’t know from Adam or Eve but who’s about to be offered a golden path to a job opportunity they never knew existed.
Back to Jonathan then with a pile of personal candidate information. Okay, sort that lot out. Somebody out there knows it was Colonel Mustard in the library with the lead piping.
Piece by piece, the evidence is put together. Like Trevor Eve starting to work on the coldest of cold cases, breathing life into the stillest of corpses, we begin to build up a picture of our quarry. Where they’re working, the status and purpose of their current employer, their role in the organisation together with scraps of knowledge gleaned from a host of other sources, adding colour to their lifestyle and flesh to their bones. And that’s before we’ve even picked up the phone to call them.
Moving on into selling the opportunity to the candidate we’ve sidestepped to ensure that we’ve done our homework on the role that’s going to remove them from the humdrum. Honesty is everything. A blurted half-baked story without substance can ruin everything for everyone. It’s possible there’ll be only one bite of the apple; are you ready?
Are you sure?
Between them Jonathan Jenkins and Sefton Owens ensure that we leave with our armoury greater, our aspirations loftier and our confidence in our innate abilities at an all-time high. Recruitment Store’s Proactive Candidate Generation course reminds us why we’re doing what we’re doing. A last minute tip from Jonathan hits home with the accuracy of a cruise missile: don’t do it tomorrow. Use what you’ve learned today. You’re the only person who knows this; that’s how special you are.
Fish where the fish aren’t. It’s so right.

Press Release: Talent Lab
Interview Venue
"Any one who’s ever interviewed will know how frustrating it can be for all concerned if the venue isn’t right.
Hotel bedrooms converted into temporary interview rooms, gawking eyes at the office and noisy reception areas in serviced facilities rarely set the right scene for important discussions about that critical role you need to fill.
And of course many candidates hate running the risk of being spotted when they turn up for a meeting about a new position.
Now all that is in the past, with the announcement of the opening of the UK’s first Talent Lab in the Thames Valley.
Located near Bracknell, Berkshire, it offers high quality, purpose built interview and development assessment facilities. The air-conditioned building has been designed in consultation with recruitment companies and hiring managers. The design incorporates sound proofed interview rooms, assessor facilities, an internet enabled psychometric testing suite, and break out rooms with AV facilities and wi-fi internet access.
