My
Favourites Tim's favourite facts from NORAS 2008
- The percentage of online job seekers that just use the internet to look for jobs has increased by 50% year on year –
job seekers are becoming more dependent on the internet
- The average number of job boards visited by online job seekers continues to fall, down from 7.0 in 2004, 5.3 in 2007 to 4.8 in 2008 –
job seekers continue to narrow their portfolio of job boards
- Traditional job board tools (registering CVs and setting up email alerts) are more popular than web 2.0 tools (blogs, RSS feeds and podcasts) –
job seekers like the core job seeking tools and haven’t yet caught onto web 2.0 functionality
Tim Elkington is MD of Enhance Media. For his favourites he has chosen three findings from NORAS 2008. You can download your free NORAS results by registering at

One: The Recruitment Conference Review by Lee Biggins
Platform 2
direct to London Waterloo! Just a short tube journey from Waterloo
lies The Royal Society, the location for today’s event ‘The
Recruitment Conference’ – “utilizing technology to increase
business and profitability”. As the coffee cart bounced up and
down the carriage I perused the line-up for the day, lots of the
industry familiars including Joe Slavin of Fish4Jobs, Dan McGuire of
Broad Bean and well, read on to see.....
Overlooking
St James’s park this remarkable Grade 1 building built in 1827 for
the Independent Scientific Academy looked like it was going to be a
great location for the day’s learning curves, after all
recruitment is a science. A full house was promised after the emails
from Recruitment Consultant had threatened just a few sparing seats
for the event.
The room is
filled by an array of industry faces from unknown local agencies to
Barclays Bank’s top recruitment dogs. It’s a beautiful wooden
panelled conference room and acoustically sound, none of that
microphone echo! We opened our stylish conference folders courtesy
of The Recruitment Consultant and pricked our ears.
James
Saunders of 4Mat.com kicked off with a strong presentation entitled
‘The Search for Value’ with a convincing argument that SEO
(Search Engine Optimisation) could really be “Your Best
Recruitment Consultant”. He gave a valuable insight of how your
business could and should be utilising the search engines for
natural listings, he lead a very Google focused talk but he puts his
tips of optimisation for long tail searches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Tail)
and measuring quality traffic across in a clear manner, with simple
terminology which was easy to follow. His key points for natural SEO
are to leave the flashy graphics and video broadcasts to the fun
sites and shopping channels. Use relevant URLs, steer clear of
non-search engine friendly ‘page source’, include a
‘site-map’, clear page titles and page headings!
The crowd
engaged and clearly enjoyed James’ views and presentation, it was
a hard act to match but Select Education’s UK Applications
Manager, their version of David Brent (Mo Tahir) launches into a
buzzword driven chorus about project managing your technical issues.
He attempts to drum into the crowd just how important getting your
software applications, hardware, and procedures right really is. I
feel it could have been a little shorter, but I guess you could say
‘you need to look at the whole pie’.
With
information overload and twitching feet, we had a chance to grab a
drink to busy the mind, many also take the opportunity to shake the
hands and compliment the first speakers for their efforts, but for
most, it was into the exhibition hall to grab a few more freebies
from the events exhibitors and sponsors.
Alan
Whitford’s turn to speak, presenting on behalf of Abtec
Partnership he helps to predict the future of online recruitment
advertising. With a touch of humour and a fantastic visual
presentation, he backed up his theories on the future of Web 2.0,
utilising social networks, and Video CV technology.
We break
for lunch and no sooner than the double doors opened, there was a
dash for the buffet offering generous rations of shepherd’s pie
and walnut and apple salad. I did end up juggling with a separate
plate of tasty deserts, a well drawn out table service would have
been more comfortable, but hey it was networking in progress!
We all
return from lunch a little weary after a good feasting, which made
great timing for the energetic ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’,
Dan McGuire from Broadbean, sponsors of the event. He soon engages
the crowd with his committed tone and sarcastic persona, he gave a
short lively well driven speech on Broadbean’s growth across the
continent and their exciting plans for global domination of the
multi-job posting market.
Joe Slavin
of Fish4Jobs starts with the promise of a pitch free speech. Talking
about the present market shape and the need for recruiters and
candidates to be more united. He touched on some great facts and
industry stats, including the rise of individuals applying to jobs
online up to 56% in 2007 from 44% in 2004, yet we are shopping less,
down 1.7% for the same period. He promotes a strong future for the
online recruitment in 2008, and shows a slide representing Britain
with the lowest employment rate compared to our counterparts in the
EU. He made some surprising indications of future rate structure
changes based on Pay as you view and Pay as you place Fish4
subscriptions, which I’m sure recruiters will be keen to hear more
about. He also described some ideas of how Fish4Jobs will try to
tackle the “Digital Tsunami of CVs” recruiters receive on a
daily basis and the ‘Serial Applicants’ randomly applying for
jobs (although he asked that these not be “publicly” revealed!).
It’s a round of applause for the American personality and not just
because he nearly fell off the stage - twice!
To sum up -
great speakers, great day, great event. Overall I would say it was
value for money.

Key
Findings: The National Online Recruitment Audience Survey (NORAS) 2008
NORAS 2008 is the largest wave of the research to date, using data from 40,601 interviews completed with online job seekers. The findings show that more and more job seekers are finding jobs online – 60% of those interviewed after applying for a vacancy they found on the internet stated they got the job, compared to 56% in 2007.
The latest results show that
- The average online job seeker earns £31,300
-
9% of online job seekers only use the internet to look for jobs
-
16% of online job seekers only use one job board
-
5% of job seekers also use social networking sites to look for jobs
-
76% have applied for a job that they found on the internet
- Emailing a CV (34%) and completing an online application form (33%) are the most popular way of applying for jobs
As well as understanding more about how job seekers use the internet to look for jobs, the results of NORAS can be used to help identify the right job board for your advertising needs. 25 job boards are participating in NORAS 2008 so far and the results booklet contains detailed demographics and audited ABCe Unique User figures for each site – helping you understand the quality and quantity of the users of each job board.
The job boards participating in NORAS feature a good cross section of generic, regional and niche job boards and includes exec-appointments.com, fish4jobs, Guardian Jobs, reed.co.uk, s1jobs, and Third Sector
Jobs.
NORAS aims to provide as much information about the online recruitment market as possible in order to help recruiters understand the job board landscape. Because of this, some top-line demographics are also included in the results booklet for six sites that have not chosen to participate in the research – CareerBuilder, JobCentrePlus, Jobserve, Jobsite, Monster and
TotalJobs.
The NORAS results will be published every month during 2008 – allowing job boards to update their ABCe figures as often as they like. Publishing the results every month also means that new job boards will be able to join throughout the year.
In addition to including ABCe Unique User figures, participating job boards now have the option of including any of the new ABCe response metrics. So far, only one job board has chosen to include these optional figures – reed.co.uk’s audit shows that they generate 1,186,014 online job applications every month – hopefully more job boards will choose to include these new optional metrics over the year.
You can download the results of NORAS for free by registering at
www.noras.co.uk. Registered users can also use NORAS interactive – the online tool that allows you to easily compare the audiences of different sites.
Registering at the site also allows you to opt in to receive email updates about NORAS – including updates about new results and the release of fact sheets that profile job seekers in key sectors – there are currently nine job seeker factsheets, profiling online job seekers in areas including accountancy, IT and senior management that use data from NORAS 2007 and these will be updated over the next couple of months.
NORAS has been running since 2002 and to date has interviewed over 140,000 online job seekers – in addition to downloading the latest results booklet, you can also download all the historical results, for free, from the site and use the data to gain an insight into changes and trends in the online recruitment market.

Press Release: idibu celebrates first birthday with system upgrades and internal redesign
"Multi-posting system idibu has unveiled its latest upgrade to coincide with the company’s first birthday. Launched on 12th February 2007, idibu, now with over 75 clients and 250 job boards has undergone a complete redesign of the system interior as well as launching the new adWatch email service. The adWatch service remembers which boards you've posted a vacancy to and also how long you selected the ad to run. The email alerts mean that users no longer need to actually login to idibu to see when their ads are due to be removed from boards. Instead, clients can choose which consultants will receive the notifications and within the daily emails users are informed which ads are expiring on which boards with a direct link to begin re-posting the ad. Call the idibu team on 0800 311 2750 or email
good@idibu.com to sign up for a month's free use of the multi-posting system."
