My Favourites

http://www.doodle.ch - we use this website all the time at work - use it to arrange meetings with lots of people and it will suggest the best date

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/employers/points - the changing immigration system means that employers will need to register as a sponsor in order to bring in migrant workers to the UK from outside the EEA.

http://www.bookcrossing.com - a friend told me about this website - you register your book, then leave it somewhere for someone else to find, in a cafe or at a train station for example, and you can follow where in the world your book ends up!

Article One:  The Secret of My Success; Interview with Paul Farrer

Paul began his recruitment career in 1986 with HMS Recruitment; the national recruitment agency which became a training ground for many of today’s recruitment leaders.  He established Phee Farrer Jones in 1992 as a sales recruitment business with a media bias. 16 years on the company is now branded as pfj with a sister brand the Graduate Recruitment Company. Employing around 100 people and with offices in London & Manchester pfj employs specialist teams servicing certain sectors or disciplines the majority of which are media centric. Paul remains passionate about recruitment and his business and is the driver of a new vision to become a 'global network of leading specialist recruitment companies' a vision that was given genuine meaning by the acquisition of a majority stake in ICUR a Sydney based recruitment business in May 2008.

What do you wish you'd known at the start of your career?
Play to your strengths and find a colleague who excels at your weaknesses.

Which person within the industry has influenced you the most?
I have been very influenced by the insights of Brian Wilkinson, Miles Hunt and Graham Palfrey-Smith. All are very different personalities but all rich in expertise and advice. But the biggest influence has been Rod Leefe – ex Chairman of Witan Jardine. The man had a plan, it worked and now he has a tan.

Is there a person in recruitment you’d most like to emulate?
Rod Leefe – as above – but now I have a plan, it was working pre-crunch, so the tan will have to wait.

Which lesson has taken the longest to learn?
Curbing my enthusiasm for my latest great idea.

What is the biggest mistake a recruiter can make?
Become complacent and think it is easy. You have to be thorough in everything you do from recognising your colleagues to managing a client.

What cliché do you think is true?
Every No brings you closer to a Yes.

What Cliché do you think is false?
The customer is always right.

What words of advice would you give to someone starting out in recruitment?
Identify your motivations and what you want out of the job. Find a sector and company you will enjoy and can match those motivations. Then work hard, have fun and make money.

What is your favourite interview technique?

"What was the name of your last boss?"

"If I bumped into ‘Sara’ and asked them about you, what would they say was really good about you?"

"If I then asked them to recall your last appraisal, what would they say you need to develop?"

"What is their phone number so I can verify this when we take a reference."

Tell me about the most interesting assignment you've worked on
Recruiting sales people for Super Channel which was the pioneer of satellite TV. It was to recruit a sales team to sell to UK advertising agencies the concept of advertising on this European satellite channel. The UK advertising market is the most measured and sophisticated in the world. Therefore recruiting people to sell to a buyer who could not see the channel or measure the audience meant that we had to find hugely charismatic, innovative, creative sales people who could get people to buy from them. Super Channel is now known as CNBC.

What's the strangest interview situation you've encountered?
A female candidate who removed her bra when I left the room to get her some information. It was the late 1980’s when the fashion was for almost see through blouses over patterned bras. I didn’t need to go to SpecSavers to notice.

Which job would you most like to recruit?
Prime Minister, the electorate can’t be trusted.

What job would you be doing if you weren't in recruitment?
Selling something to someone or an alcoholic bar owner.

Is there a famous person you'd like to interview?
Osama Bin Laden.

What do you think it is that has made you so successful?
Depends what your measure of success is. The need to succeed, having a family to support (that is two way), not afraid to take risks, a lot of luck, surrounding myself with cleverer people than me and having an overwhelmingly optimistic nature.

This is part of a regular series of articles we run in the newsletter. In each article Louise interviews someone who has achieved success within the recruitment industry.  If you would like to recommend someone for inclusion in the series please email contact2@ukrecruiter.co.uk with their details.

Article Two: Expand the Supply of High-Quality Candidates By Bill Radin

No advantage is too small when faced with a difficult search, and there’s simply no reason not to ask for as much help as possible before you begin—especially from your client. Not only do I want to know the sources of all candidates interviewed to date, I also want to know where candidates with the requisite skills might be found, such as competitors, companies with similar products, non-profit organizations, universities, research centres and so on.

It never pays to be shy when gathering useful information. On one search assignment, I asked the employer to run a computer printout of his company’s direct competitors, complete with their addresses and phone numbers, and then circle the ones most likely to harbour suitable candidates.

On another assignment, I had the gall to ask the HR manager from my client’s competitor to send me all the resumes his company received from a recent ad for a similar position. To my amazement, 300 resumes arrived at my office via UPS the next day, and from the pile of unwanted candidates, I recruited one who was ultimately hired by my client. I can’t recall any special technique I used to solicit the resumes; I guess the HR manager was in a good mood the day I asked for them. But if I hadn’t asked, I wouldn’t have received.

Thirteen Additional Sources of Referrals

There are a number of vehicles for increasing your candidate flow other than the investment of your personal phone time. These include:

1. Networks. Many successful recruiters turn to all-purpose or niche market networks to augment their supply of candidates and increase their billings.

2. Colleagues. By asking for help on a difficult search, you may find another recruiter who’ll save the day by supplying you with the perfect candidate.

3. Industry, trade and alumni directories. Need I say more?

4. Company phone books. Like alumni directories, company phone books can be worth their weight in gold.

5. Inter-company publications. Most organizations of any size distribute monthly or quarterly newsletters to their employees. Chatty in nature, these publications read like a People magazine for recruiters.

6. Patent ownership. I like this technique for finding brainy candidates. Remember, for every product on the market, there’s an inventor (that is, a referral source or candidate) that’s applied for patent protection.

7. Position advertising. I’ve never placed my own ads for candidates; however, on rare occasions, I’ve written classified ads for my clients, who pay for the insertions.

8. Self-advertising. Many recruiters run classified ads in trade magazines to increase their visibility—and their candidate flow.

9. Trade show attendance. There’s no fun like trolling for recruits. If you don’t attend your target market’s trade shows at least every other year, you’re missing out on a wealth of opportunities.

10. Job fair participation. Many job fairs are generic or location-dependent and tend to attract unemployable or entry-level candidates. However, some recruiters swear by them.

11. Listing your business in the Directory of Executive Recruiters. The most visible directory of recruiters is published annually by Kennedy Publications. As a result of my listing in the directory, I receive anywhere from five to 10 unsolicited resumes a day. While most of the resumes are totally inappropriate and end up in the trash, some are right up my alley. The UK Equivalent would be the Executive Grapevine.

12. Research assistance. Your recruiting situation may require you to do all your own candidate sourcing, which is fine. On the other hand, if you’re in a position to hire someone to help you, it might improve your overall efficiency.  . For a list of recruitment researchers visit http://www.ukrecruiter.co.uk/suppliers/resres.htm

13. Personal visibility. Whether you speak at your local Chamber meeting, write an article on changes in the work force, or attend a national trade association convention, your personal visibility will stimulate candidate referrals as well as marketing leads.

Naturally, each search situation will determine the usefulness of these various candidate flow vehicles. Whatever method you choose, remember that in our business, there’s no such thing as too much high quality inventory.
