Article One:  Striving, thriving, surviving - A Plan for Survival & Growth by Bill Boorman

In the fourth and final of a series of articles, Bill Boorman of The Bill Boorman Consultancy explores the essential areas for change aimed at companies living through the downturn.

In my last article I looked at performance management, keeping lean and using strategic alliances to remain competitive. In this, my final piece I’m going to address controlling costs, monitoring your competition and the importance of strong leadership.

Cost control is obviously important whatever the economic landscape and if you’re only looking at controlling your costs because of the downturn then there is something very wrong. But in a recession cash is king. So while monitoring your cash position is something that you probably do on a regular basis as a matter of course, in this market you should be doing it every day. If you’re used to only signing off expenditure over a certain level then reduce that level - it may be an old adage but taking care of the pennies does really mean that the pounds will take care of themselves! And while increasing headcount may seem contradictory it may be well worth increasing the number of credit controllers you employ. And don’t forget incentives - they are not just for your sales team so consider a bonus for the reduction of debtor days. It’s also important to get personally involved - overdue debts are ultimately your responsibility. If your lease is coming up for renewal then now is the perfect time to try and re-negotiate - and don’t be afraid of holding out for a discount. Finally - but most importantly, credit check your clients - no matter who they are or how big and successful a brand they are. After all, who would have bothered credit checking Woolworth’s a year ago?

I talked about strategic alliances with competitors in the last article but being aware of your competition and who their clients are, whilst always important, is even more crucial during a downturn. Why? Because you may be able to take advantage of those organisation that are not doing as well as you. If one of your competitors closes then you need to quickly be able to target their clients. There may also be opportunities for a cut price acquisition or a database purchase. However, there will also be consultants on the market and you should be wary of taking on those that may have failed.

A recession is also the perfect time to reassess your own role - are you leading from the front, visible and communicating with your team? Or are you locked away in meetings with a worried look on your face? Your team need to have confidence in you and it’s a great idea to catch them doing things right and praise them. At a recent presentation I heard a story about Marks & Spencer and how all their senior leadership team were coached on the correct body language while walking around the store so that staff felt that they had positive and confident leaders. Leadership is more than learning a set of skills - it’s about inspiring your people and knowing what will encourage them to work smarter. Whatever your leadership style is remember that a good manager is like a good teacher - everyone remembers their name.

Article Two: Online Recruitment comes to Park Lane (well, Piccadilly!) by Holly Scothern

Onrec’s annual trade conference at the Sheraton Park Lane (on Piccadilly, not Park Lane as I found out to the detriment of my heels), while much more sparse than previous years, still opened people’s eyes to new ways to innovate and improve, very much centring on the prevailing social media trends we’re all now aware of.

Presentations from Google (http://www.Google.co.uk/AdWords), Adicio (http://www.adicio.com), SiteVisibility (http://www.sitevisibility.co.uk) and Actonomy (http://www.actonomy.com) were followed by a panel session where there was the opportunity to drill down further and debate the details.

Hosted by a rather suave Mr Matt Burney, Onrec’s Sales Director, the general organisation of the afternoon was both slick and effective, with numerous breaks in the proceedings for delegates to chat with the businesses that had set up stall around the edge of the room. With little mobile signal in the conference room, or included wifi for the attendees, exhibitors or even organisers, attention was very much focused on the speakers, but this was a little perturbing for those forced to pay hotel prices just to check their emails during the day.

In true UKRecruiter style, no report would be complete without a nod to the lunch served – which was noticeably absent. Justifiable (mostly) due to the fact that the morning and afternoon sessions were billed as separate conferences, the considerable percentage who committed to both were a little confused to say the least! Lovely table for coffee, tea and biscuits during the networking breaks though – and I made sure to try all the biccies just so I could testify to their quality for you!

Luke Mckend from Google delivered a presentation up to his usual impeccable standards, with a very humanistic view of intricate technology techniques that ensured the audience, whatever their technical level, could buy into and appreciate them. His main thrust focused on how social media tools and content – whether brand or user generated - could provide very effective ways of reaching audiences for a very small budget, giving the recruitment industry ideas on how to weather the storm whilst still innovating. There was of course a clear reference to the just-launched Street View service, but his (unspoken) ‘Marmite’ reference of people either loving it or hating it, but either way having a strong reaction to it, took this out of being PR puffery and made it a well-thought out addition.

Daniel Rowles, Director of SiteVisibility then took up the mantle to speak about mash ups, widgets and how to combine content from different sources to deliver a single resource that engages and entertains at the same time as doing a really good job for recruitment. Filip De Geijter, CEO of Actonomy was great – but his Belgian accent created what were, for me, the most memorable moments of the afternoon – repeated references to LinkedIn as Link’UD’In – which is still making me smile as I type!

Finally, the lovely Terry Baker from Adicio took to the stage to deliver a sound, sensible and strategic viewpoint about how valuable enhancements can be made by evolving job boards from simplistic advertising mediums to clever solutions that deliver quality, well-matched candidates to their clients.

The final panel was in essence the ‘TwitterJobSearch session’ (http://www.twitterjobsearch.com), which of course made me smile rather broadly (as they are one of my fabulous clients). The considerable buzz about the new service was still very fresh at that point, and as Matt Burney said by way of introduction, it was clearly the “zeitgeist of the moment”. Bill Fischer, Director, answered the varied questions from the floor about the service, its plans and purpose with his usual understated charm. Stepping away from TwitterJobSearch (for a moment!) the panel gave some good answers to the query about which bloggers they read and rate, including:

· · Joel Cheesman http://www.cheezhead.com/)
· · Matt Alder (http://digitalrecruiting.typepad.co.uk/digital_recruiting/matt_alder)
· · Peter Gold (http://blog.hirestrategies.co.uk)
· · The ERE network (http://www.ere.net/BLOGS)
· · Jobboarders (http://jobboarders.ning.com/profiles/blog/list
· · Seth Godin (http://sethgodin.typepad.com)

After the 5pm wrap-up, a few of us moved into the hotel bar for some much needed liquid refreshment and further debate about the day. The room soon turned into a much more sophisticated place with others arriving in their finery for the awards that evening and looking round at the mingling of smiling faces and smart people, it was clear that competitors and partners alike shared a real bond. This ability to come together to debate, learn and celebrate as a mature industry of like-minded professionals gives me a lot of hope for our future.
