One: AESC Researchers & Associates Summit; The Art of Research Review by Louise Triance
Last Thursday (21st September) the annual Researchers Summit held by The Association of Executives Search Consultants (AESC) took place in London at the Tate Modern.
The day kicked off with an 8am start for breakfast (Danish pastries) and registration. The conference sessions took place in a blood-red auditorium that I feared might be migraine inducing to the hundred or so delegates. However, as the day wore on I just seemed to get used to the outrageous surroundings.
The day was a mixture of training sessions, sponsor presentations and opportunities to discuss trends within the industry. The attendees were researchers of all levels from trainees up to “career researchers”. Topics included “candidate catastrophes” (dealing with difficult candidates), “Career paths” (a panel of successful researchers talking about their career’s to date) and “how to make every telephone call count”. One of the sessions that would probably have been relevant for all types of recruiter was “Googling for candidates”. This was presented by Chris Forman , the CEO of AIRS training. Chris was a fabulous presenter and talked the delegates through using Google to build search strings to find information such as corporate telephone directories. He also talked about how to use business networking tools and directories such as LinkedIn. This was a really well received subject. Both areas of this session are something I plan to cover in the newsletter and my blog in the coming weeks.
The final session of the day was about “making consultants value researchers”. The panel of speakers for this session all really valued their own researchers and the audience seemed to feel valued by their firms so there wasn’t the lively debate there could have been in different circumstances. However, the main suggestions were around communication; involving researchers in the client brief, talking through problems in the assignment as they arise and holding a de-briefing session at the end of the assignment.
The day ended with the AESC Researchers Award for Excellence and Professionalism in Research being awarded to Gwattie Bakker of Eric Salmon and Partners. This was followed by a champagne reception on the top floor of the Tate Modern.
I thought it was a really well put together conference. Even the “sponsor” sessions were interesting. The majority of the speakers were high profile within the industry and the mixture of attendees (from many different countries) meant the breakout and interactive sessions were really valuable. There was also a lot of networking and sharing of ideas taking place. The Researchers Summit is an annual feature of the AESC diary and one that was a pleasure to attend.

Two: CV Database Review – Jobs in Credit by Louise Triance
Site Name: Jobs in Credit
URL: http://www.jobsincredit.com
Site Statistics:
Sectors covered: Any credit related vacancy across any sector
Target candidate level: Two main levels – credit control £15-£25K and credit manager/analyst £25-£40K
Number of CV's held: 7,800
Geographic split of candidates: 99% UK
Site Launched: November 2004
Cost to recruiters: £300 per month includes unlimited vacancy posting
How it works:
Once you have logged onto the site you select the Search CVs options. From here you can search by basic Boolean terminology (AND, OR, NOT) to build your search and select location(s) from a drop down list.
The results show a table of candidate’s who match the criteria. The information in the table varies (I presume depending on what the candidate has provided) and can include name of the candidate, their email address, the last time they were “active “on the site, their salary, date of birth.
You can either select a number of candidates and “add to shortlist” or click to view one CV at a time. When you view the CVs they are saved to your PC and you can open them in Word. The CVs are in the candidate’s own format.
Shortlisted candidates can be contacted via email using a form on the site.
New registrations are checked 3 times a day with poor candidates filtered out. Candidates are contacted with a request to update their details every 3 months. CVs which are over 12 months old are removed.
Strengths
-
You can see when each candidate was “last active” which could help enable you to contact the ones most likely to still be on the market
-
When you view the search results you can click on an email address to send a email to that person using outlook (or whatever email program you use).
-
The site covers a very niche area, meaning a recruiter can be sure of relevant candidates, and have invested in promotion in specialist websites and trade magazines.
Weaknesses
-
You can’t view a CV without saving it to your PC. This makes scanning through a large list of potential candidates quite time consuming.
-
When the search results are returned you can’t view the job title or industry of your candidate – this would make it easier to determine who to shortlist.
-
You can’t “sort” your search results. It would be good to be able to list them by salary or date last active. Furthermore you cannot search by these criteria.
-
The relevance of the search results wasn’t 100%. I searched for “compliance officer” and about 30% of the candidates weren’t currently a Compliance Officer. Being able to view the current job title, or search on it, would have helped in these circumstances.
-
The down side of such a niche job board is that it only provides part of the solution for a recruiter whose specialism is broader than credit professionals. Obviously this is a problem for users of all niche sites.
Summary
The CV searching functionality is very basic and viewing CVs is a bit time consuming. However, there are a good number of candidates within the niche market. The site is owned by Brett Marlow who worked in the credit industry for 10 years before launching the business and has used credit industry press to advertise the site and build the database of credit specific people. I think that compared with other sites (although not necessarily within this niche) £300 a month is quite a lot of money for such an unsophisticated tool. However, if it can facilitate just one placement a month it would be worth it.
NB: It is worth mentioning that Jobs in Credit have informed us they have committed a significant investment to improving the CV search functionality that will resolve most of the weaknesses we found. The changes expected to implemented before the end of October 2006.
