Article: Bottom
up Planning: The Pre-Planning Questionnaire by Steve Finkel
2011 is almost upon us. Like all good managers (or recruiters), you’re undoubtedly preparing an extensive and detailed business plan for the new year. No? Well, maybe you’ve been starting at the wrong place.
Planning can certainly be done with the manager solely determining goals, objectives and means of achieving them based on his own knowledge and creativity. Your staff can also invent extensive plans with little guidance from management. Both of you, however, will find the entire planning process to be much easier if a simple series of questions is first answered by each recruiter and then used as a guide to a more formal plan.
Following is a questionnaire which, when filled out by all recruiters first and then the manager, will enhance the entire planning process. If you are a recruiter, you should follow this process for yourself.
1. What amount of money do you want to earn in 2011?
2. To do so, what amount of billings will be required?
3. What is your average fee?
4. How many placements/completed searches must you make to achieve #2?
5. What is your first-interview-to-placement/completed search ratio?
6. How many first interviews must you achieve in order to achieve #4?
7. How many first interviews must you achieve per month to achieve #6? How many per week does this mean?
8. To achieve your financial goals for 2011, what is the one important thing you need to start doing next year?
9. What is the one most important thing you need to stop doing year?
10. What is the most important thing you need to continue doing year?
11. In what one area of our business do you believe your skills to improve most?
12. (For people with 2 years of experience or more.) What -specific books, CDs or DVDs do you believe would helpful to enhance your
skills? (Note: See Amazon or our website for some research.)
13. What can our company do to assist you in the achievement of goals?
14. What additional duties or responsibility do you feel you like to get involved in by year-end?
15 What do you feel needs to be done to prepare you for these?
16. What strategic or marketing plans do you believe would improve our company’s market share this year?
17. If you were president of our firm, what is the one thing you would start doing to improve billings?
18. What is the one thing you would change to improve?
19. What is the one thing you would continue doing?
20. Are there any other suggestions you have which you believe lead to an improved firm?
Depending on your firm, your staff, and your own attitude towards suggestions/criticism, you may wish to put questions 16 – 20 on a separate sheet of paper and have them submitted unsigned.
This should not be done in a casual way. Take time for serious thought and write out your answers.
There are two different methods of planning for improvement during the coming year. The Top-Down model has its adherents. Nevertheless, the “Bottom-Up Planning” outlined here will go far towards establishing an appropriate “battle plan” to maximise production in the year that lies before us.
Steve Finkel, widely-regarded as most respected and experienced author and trainer, has seen our industry through multiple cycles of good times and bad, speaking and conducting training programs with firms of all sizes on five continents. The Fordyce Letter describes him as “universally regarded as our industry’s leading trainer”. And the National Association of Personnel Services (US) has said he possesses “…the most in-depth knowledge of search and placement in industry history”. The producer of many excellent products, his best-selling books “Breakthrough!” and “Search and Placement!” are available either directly or through Amazon US. His website is
