Article: PR
for Recruiters by Tracey Dunn
Q: What is the value of PR for recruiters?
A: PR and its value can sometimes be quite hard to explain. With advertising you pay a fee and in return you get a nice, pretty advert saying how great you are - simple. It’s not that straight forward in PR; however we argue that PR is actually more powerful.
People view adverts with a sense of scepticism. They know you have paid for it, they know you have written it yourself; they may have a quick glance but it lacks that degree of credibility. What PR can do is not only put your name in front of your potential clients and candidates, but build an image of you and your company as an authoritative commentator and industry leader. Whether you’re quoted alongside other experts in your field, or cited as an author of an informative and interesting article, you’re in the press saying something that is going to be of use to your customers. And that means they’ll remember you and your brand.
Once journalists get to know that you’re a good source of information, they’ll come back to you – and that will lead to even more press exposure and credibility. But what’s important is to use this coverage, to avoid it becoming tomorrow’s chip paper. By showing it to potential new clients you may just put yourself ahead of the competition. And it’s not just potential clients and candidates PR can help gain – it can help attract new employees for yourself and also boost your brand, and
subsequently the value of your business, if you’re looking to sell.
However don’t forget that PR isn’t just about getting into the press. PR suppliers can assist with marketing, award submissions and social media – all the other things that help to boost your brand’s success and credibility. And don’t forget crisis management – facing a scandal? Let your PR people deal with it – that’s got to be worth the investment! PR can deliver great results, but it’s not a short-term project, it needs to be a continuous programme to build up a good momentum and have a serious impact.
How to work successfully with a PR Company
Many organisations think long and hard about enlisting the services of a PR company, but once the decision has been made what do organisations need to know about how to best work with a PR?
Know what your goal is
When using a PR expert it is important to have established aims and objectives in place – for example attracting more clients and candidates, or strengthening your employer brand. You may need your PR company to help with goal setting or you may already have an idea of what you want to achieve and how, but once you have decided make sure you communicate as much information as possible to your PR people so they’re able to put in place a plan to best suit your needs.
Know what to expect
Once you have decided what PR support you need, ensure that both you and the PR company know what to expect of the relationship. This is particularly important for those organisations that have not previously worked with a PR! In your initial kick off meeting make sure you go through what you expect of you supplier and what input you as a business will have, but at the same time let the PR company tell you how they work – this will help both sides manage expectations. You’ll also need to have regular catch ups and reviews with your PR supplier to assess and evaluate progress, discuss ideas for the future and to make sure that both sides are happy with how things are going.
Allow your PR Company to do their job
This may sound obvious but it is not always so! Organisations using a PR consultancy may be hesitant to give away control of part of their business, especially when it means dealing with the media. But what you should remember is that PR people are the experts in this area – they know what journalists want and expect, so listen to their advice. Leaving the PR to the specialists also means that you and your team have more time to concentrate on your business rather than becoming budding journalists.
Get your staff involved
As the saying goes, two heads are always better than one and this is certainly the case in PR. It is very helpful to get the ideas of your whole team; after all, you and your staff know what goes on day to day and it is surprising how many good stories and ideas come out of discussions with team members. With the whole team on board you will be surprised at the ideas which can then turn into articles, blog postings and press releases.
Use your PR
After investing in PR it is essential you use the coverage you have received - don’t be tempted to file it away or simply put it in a folder in reception. Its aim is to establish you as an authoritative commentator in your field, so make sure you show it off! This is easy to do with the increased use of social media - post it on Twitter, your blog, Facebook and LinkedIn - your contacts will see it but also may pass it on to others. Also share it amongst your team so they know what has been achieved – this is a great way to get the team motivated and they can pass it on to clients when the opportunity arises which will boost credibility. Turn your recent coverage into a media pack and show it to potential new clients; it can be a powerful tool in winning that new business.
Remember it’s not all about the press
Although media relations – i.e. getting you quoted in the press – is a big part of PR, it’s not everything. PR is all about communicating and engaging with your stakeholders and there are many ways in which to do that; through social media, the messages on your website, marketing collateral and so on. PR people have a way with words so can really add value when it comes to developing these areas of your business.
